For our first post in a series we are calling #cocoafacts, we wanted to address one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from our customers.
As some of you may have noticed we are called Ohene Cocoa yet our main product is our premium cacao nibs. Why didn’t we just call them cocoa nibs you might ask? Were we trying to sound fancy? The answer to this question is definitely no. The difference between cocoa and cacao lies in the way the two are processed. Although they both come from the seed of the cocoa tree, one of Ghana’s leading exports, once harvested, cocoa is made by grinding and roasting the beans. Cacao, on the other hand, is the natural sun-dried unroasted bean.
At Ohene Cocoa, all our products are made from cacao and this is one of the reasons our products are both #superfoods and #supergood. The minimal processing that occurs in the production of cacao also allows it to retain several nutritional benefits such as the fact that it’s high in magnesium which is associated with maintaining low blood pressure. Cacao is also known to have antioxidant properties and most importantly it’s very very tasty.
